Shelley, Christopher and I have thoroughly enjoyed putting these races on, but with the additional hassles around permitting, and not being able to have two different courses, we've decided to end the series after an amazing 10 years. This will be the last year for the Sunstroke Summer Stampede.
My son has gone from toddling around on the playscape during the races to winning his age group in the series, and has even finished 3 half marathons. It has been fun to watch him grow up with all of you who have run the series.
We couldn't have done it without Vance Taylor, our original volunteer extraordinaire. Vance has evolved to a major player in the Austin running scene and has gone from volunteering to running 5ks and marathons - qualifying for Boston in his first attempt! - then taking over the Distance Challenge. My sister Michelle has also helped out at many of the races, handing out water at the turnaround point. As a family we have really enjoyed being a part of the running community.
Thanks for everything you have all done. I'm looking forward to a great final season at the Stampede.
So, if you've ever been on the fence about running one of the Summer Stampedes, you've only got 12 more chances.
